Spinners Rashid Khan and Sharafuddin Ashraf produced a clinical display as Afghanistan defeated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 38 runs in the T20 Tri-series in Sharjah on Monday. Rashid finished with 3 for 21 while Sharafuddin claimed 3 for 24, ensuring Afghanistan’s defence of 188 remained unbreached.

In the process, Rashid Khan etched his name in history, becoming the highest wicket-taker in T20 internationals with 165 scalps, surpassing New Zealand’s Tim Southee (164).
Zadran and Atal Lead Afghanistan’s Charge
Opting to bat first, Afghanistan overcame the early loss of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (7) as Sediqullah Atal (54 off 40) and Ibrahim Zadran (63 off 40) stitched together a commanding 84-run partnership. Their effort set the platform before Azmatullah Omarzai (20 off 12) and Karim Janat (23 off 10) added a late flourish to post 188/4. For the UAE, Muhammad Rohid (2/34) and Saghir Khan (2/52) were the only bowlers to strike.
UAE Falter Despite Waseem and Chopra Resistance
Chasing 189, the UAE suffered a middle-order meltdown, with five batters dismissed in single digits. Skipper Muhammad Waseem (67 off 41) fought bravely, hammering four boundaries and six sixes, and shared a 61-run stand with Ethan D’Souza (12). Rahul Chopra kept the fight alive with a valiant unbeaten 52 off 45 balls, including three fours and as many sixes, but with Rashid and Sharafuddin weaving their web, UAE managed only 150/8 in 20 overs.
Sharafuddin Named Player of the Match
Sharafuddin Ashraf, who was declared Player of the Match, credited his success to trust within the team.
We have a very good spin department, good magicians. The way Rashid trusted me in my ability, I just try to read the situation and deliver what the team needs.
Rashid Eyes Pakistan Challenge
Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan said the team was now in a stronger position heading into their next clash against Pakistan.
Winning gives you positive energy. That last game against Pakistan was a wake-up call. We must bring our best game against teams like them.
